The ladies of local Gaelic football club, Doire Cholmcille, completed a unique double on Sunday by bringing the County Derry Junior Chmpionship to the city for the first time. Having already won the League, the city side completed a remarkable season unbeaten by defeating Ardtrea in a most entertaining and exciting final.
Despite the difficult playing conditions the standard of play was superb as outstanding scores from both teams kept the crowd entertained right to the final whistle. Doire Cholmcille started brightly with a fine point from Áine Quigley being quickly followed by a crucial Amanda Heaney goal. Ardtrea kept in touch with points from Louise Taylor but with Paula Foley and Una Harkin driving forward at every opportunity the city side began to make possession count. Three excellent moves ended in superb scores from Victoria Mallett, Sarah McGriskin and Kate McAdams. With five different players on the scoresheet Colmcille looked to be pulling clear when Ardtrea struck for a wonder goal from Kiera Mackle to leave the city side only a point ahead at half time, 1-4 to 1-3.
Colmcille's dominance at midfield continued in the second half as, player of the match, Victoria Mallett and Paula Foley gave their best performances of the season to create the chances to seal victory. With a rock solid defence under control of team captain Paula Fleming, Ardtrea only scored two further points while the brilliant Una Harkin and Claire McWillams in the half back line drove forward at every opportunity. Elaine Mitchell worked tirelessly to create chances for scores which were converted by Áine Quigley (0-2) and Victoria Mallett (0-2). An outstanding individual point from play by Paula Foley brought one of the biggest cheers of the day and a thoroughly deserved Championship victory to the city team.
Doire Cholmcille Ladies now go forward with confidence to represent the County in the quarter-final of the Ulster Chapionship on Sunday 7th October taking on the Co. Monaghan Champions.
