LADY CHAMPIONS!!!

Doire Cholmcille 3-10
Ballinascreen      1-2

What a season it has been for the Ladies of Doire Cholmcille! On Saturday they extended their unbeaten record by winning the County Derry Junior title - In the club's first year!

The club, which is the first of it's kind in the city, was only set up in Febuary to build on the recent school interest in Ladies Gaelic Football and the players have certainly taken to the opportunity to impress in the county.

Having beaten Ballinderry, Faughanvale, Creggan and Ardtrea the girls defeated a gallant Bellaghy team in the semi-final to qualify for Saturday's final. In an exciting final played infront of a large crowd at Ballerin; the game was much more evenly contested than the scoreline suggests. In fact only one point seperated the teams at half time. Despite good scores from Áine Quigley, Victoria Mallett and Shauna Mc Callion, a goal against the run of play for Ballinascreen left the South Derry girls very much in touch with a slight wind advantage in the second half.

However the city ladies were determined that the league title should come to the banks of the Foyle for the first time ever and produced a superb performance. In defense, Michelle Gill, Claire Sproule, Una Harkin and team captain Paula Fleming provided the springboard for Doire Cholmcille's second half dominance. With Paula Foley, Ciara O' Kane and Victoria Mallett making a very effective link between midfield and attack, the Ballinascreen defense was put under severe pressure and the scores followed. Three second half goals from Shauna Mc Callion not only clinched victory but won Shauna a richly deserved 'player of the match' award. Áine Quigley's darting solo-runs were a constant threat to the Screen defense and a hardworking performance from Claire Mc Williams was rewarded with an excellent point from play to round off an historic victory.
